One of my earliest memories is of the Grampians and it has been an environment that has been important to me all my life.This scene depicted in Grampians Awakening is the result of a co-operation between fact and fantasy.The light conditions occurred one morning as I was driving up to our house in Victoria Valley and demanded to be painted, or at least attempted.Sketches done at the time were augmented by three other visits to the site during the process of the painting, each at the same time of day, but sadly never again in the same light.

The strength of the landscape begged for its replication in the lower part of the picture, so I unilaterally created a small lake with which to create a reflection, and hence to attract some Brolgas.These stately birds have the dignity to carry the scene and the elegance and softness with which to tie it together in a balanced composition.
